This is not real life. Sadly, this is wishful thinking. While the weather is nice enough to enjoy a morning like this. The back patio is still covered with pollen, but I am hopeful we are nearing the end. I keep washing off just one glass table as a barometer. When it fails to get recoated in pollen it is time to give everything a good hose down and wash.

It feels like the pollen was particularly heavy this year. Do you agree? Or do I just forget how bad it is each year?

When the only accessible southern-facing window is in your bathroom, you set up your seedlings there. I hoped they would thrive on the humidity and the subtle warmth from the heated floors.

The last video was taken today. I started the seeds about 6 weeks ago.

Today, I started hardening then off with a trip outside.

Did you start seeds this year? I have several flower varieties, heirloom tomatoes and cucumber in this tray.

A small part of a recent renovation that made a huge impact on function and style. (One of my favorite parts of design is when those two collide in the most beautiful way.)

The cabinets were recycled from the existing kitchen. The extra space above the cabinets were clad with beadboard, like the backsplash, but a concealed sliding door was installed so the space was available for extra storage.

While we wait for the lighter slipcovers for our sofas to dry on this not so sunny day, let’s look back to last spring in the living room. I haven’t given the specifics of my spring styling much consideration this year. The dusty pinks will likely make a comeback. I have no qualms about it at all. I’m just ready for a lighter and brighter look.

I can’t speak to where you live, but here, it is

I can’t speak to where you live, but here, it is spring. Here’s why I say so.
1. It was nearly in the 80’s for more than 3 days last week.
2. The corner nursery and farmers market near my house hung the giant OPEN sign on their building this week. They always start the season with a fern sale. It will be interesting to see if the price goes up again this year.
3. I cut one tulip bloom and brought it inside to admire. The other 137 are still “processing” in the new flower bed. Check out my stories for Tulip Watch 2023.
4. The giant pear tree near my house is blooming and I will go trim a few branches today for a large vase on my dining table.

All this to say, I am going to try and stay off my computer and prep the house for spring.

The smallest sneak peek of a a kitchen from whole house project very literally years in the making.

These homeowners have had the worst luck possible with just about every subcontractor they hired. (Bless their hearts. They had their own subcontractors hired before they brought me on board.)

Today, I was finally able to go and style a small part of the kitchen I designed for them. It was so nice to see them happy and getting settled in their house in the country. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of making it a warm and welcoming home.

The following photos are the markers I use to remind myself where to turn because the house isn’t on any kind of map. “The turn is right after the deer mailbox and then take right side of the fork in the road.”

Waiting on spring. Resisting the urge to rush to spring inside when the air is still cold and the light is brighter without the cover of the trees. While the landscape seems monochromatic this season embracing contrast feels nice. Soft branches, that don’t feel too spring-like and soft textiles make it feel cozy.

What are your favorite ways to overcome the blah’s of winter? Or do you just throw yourself directly into spring in your home?

Plants are part of the finishing touch in any room I style. It took me a while to find the right specimen for our glamorous bathroom update, but this ficus tree (Ficus Nitida) was worth the wait.

In here, I love how it softens the expanse of glass which felt cold and empty before.

The window to this room faces south to south east and is filled with bright light all day. I water it once a week most of the time, but the proper care is probably every 5 days especially in the warmer months. (This takes some effort on my part because I either buy or train my plants to except watering every Friday or Saturday.) The ficus does occasionally drop leaves and it makes me sad and worried, but soon new sprouts emerge and I know all is well.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to a faux tree when conditions aren’t right, but in this bathroom a living thing is infinitely better.

Happy New Year! The tradition at our house is to take down Christmas during the day. For dinner, we always have my grandmother’s cabbage casserole and black eyed peas. Southern lore says black eyed peas will bring you luck and cabbage will bring wealth. Who am I to tempt fate? It’s just what we do.

Back in 2015, when the blog was just for family and friends, I added my version of my grandma’s recipe to the blog. I’ll add the link in the bio if you are interested. (Don’t expect much of the photography.) Even my cabbage averse family will eat this. Every year, I eat all the leftovers for lunch over the next few days and then get on the path to healthy eating.

What are your traditions for New Year’s Day? I’d love to hear. I always find family traditions fascinating.

Oh, and about this image. I loved seeing this little tree on the table I picked up from Roundtop Texas this year. I will miss this view.

One more remodel on the blog before the year is up! A traditionally inspired cottage style bathroom was completely remodeled with elevated, luxurious finishes. The uninviting, chopped up floor plan needed to be reimagined in the existing footprint. The solutions and the full reveal are worth seeing, but the story behind the scenes takes this client’s bathroom from a successful project to a personal full circle.

It is about now that people start taking down thei

It is about now that people start taking down their Christmas decor or start talking about doing it. I prefer to keep it all up until January 1 for several reasons.
1. I am generally not ready to see it go.
2. I love keeping the house feeling festive for New Year’s Eve.
3. When our children were little, the week between Christmas and New Year always felt slower paced and I truly got to enjoy the season. So now it’s a tradition.
4. All of the above are good reasons to procrastinate. 😂

Whatever you choose, to do is right for you and your family. I understand that some people are ready for a clean slate and others keep their Christmas up to follow a religious calendar.

Who’s kitchen is ready for some holiday baking. I’m going to start tonight or tomorrow. I usually try to wait until closer to the big day. I like my treats to be fresh and if I make them too far in advance my people eat them before the holiday has come.
