Numbered Baskets: Quickie makeover

I’ve been trying to reduce the decorations I have in my kitchen.  There was just too much going on over the cabinets and most of the things were just too dark.

I thought I’d keep just a few of my favorite Tuscan jars and these baskets above the fridge.  I wanted the few accessories I kept in the kitchen to have an impact instead of lots of little things that just look like clutter.

Initially, these baskets, while I thought they were attractive. Minus the layers of dust and grease from being up on top of the cabinets near the stove.

The only problem was they were nearly the same color as the kitchen cabinets.  And I found the best house numbers on clearance at Lowe’s.  A whopping $2.50 per number!

So I got to work with a wash of Annie Sloan Chalk paint using the color, Country Grey.  It’s a lovely warm, almost kind of yellow khaki color.

Initially, I was going to leave the band along the top, but I changed my mind. 😉

To distress them after the wash, I just used a rag balled up and rubbed fairly hard.

They were a little dull and flat still, so I decided to use some wax.  This time I used Johnson’s Paste Wax and then buffed.  I noticed when I buffed that more of the paint came off, but that was good.

To apply the numbers, I used an aw to make a hole and then just stuck the supplied screw in.  A little tightening and it was good.  If these were going to be used I think I’d follow up with some glue, but they are working just fine as they are over the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Recent visitors have asked what the numbers mean.  Do they have to mean anything?

Can’t they just be cool and different?  I won’t go into all the personal details, but 2 and 4 are great numbers for us.  There are 4 of us in our family and we started just with the 2 of us, I think that good enough. 🙂

All you need to make these yourself, is a quick trip to a hardware store and an easy afternoon. (Check the back isle of your Lowe’s you never know what you might find.)

These were done super quick.  Just the kind of project to get that DIY junkie fix! Ha!
