Welcome to this week’s update on the progress of the One Room Challenge. Not sure what I’m talking about? Well, the One Room Challenge is a bi-annual event where design and DIY bloggers across the internet all take on the challenge of completely transforming a room in just 6 weeks. Our gracious host is Linda from Calling it Home.
Here is how the room looks now after just 5 weeks.
And as a reminder of how far we have come, here is a look at the before.
Ok, I’m going to be completely honest here and admit that emotionally, I have been all over the place this week. One day the weariness sets in and I think, “There’s no way I’m going to get this finished in time.” Then the next day, I feel confident with what I have achieved and start to feel a little more sure of the completion.
Today, I’m back on the side of thinking it is possible. My dear husband, Richard has taken the next two days off of work. With his help painting, hanging the stunning French empire chandelier, cutting the mosaic tiles for the perimeter of the floor of the shower, and his overall ability to push me to stay focused I think it’s likely we will finish.
If you are a subscriber or follow me on Facebook or Instagram, then you might have seen the little mini-reveal on Monday night of the secret I’ve been keeping.
My friend and I hung the most beautiful wallpaper by Candice Olson for York. You can read more about this wallpaper from Wallpaper Boulevard and a few key pointers for hanging wallpaper, in that post.
If you look closely you can get a sneak peek of the gorgeous door casing and the architrave from Metrie.
The Metrie finishes in this room are going to be so elegant! I wish I had had time to get them up sooner, but then I am hoping you are going to be completely amazed at the way it will transform the room.
Speaking of time. This is where the bulk of my time has gone this week.
Tiling the shower.
The bench with its lovely angles, the angled outside wall and the niche, each require a good bit of precision. Which of course, translates into time.
Wednesday afternoon I finally had enough tile completed for the glass door company to come and measure. Sadly, I will not have the glass by next week. No one can turn out custom glass that fast. I am over that detail by now. I am thinking on the bright side. The gorgeous marble look tile will actually photograph better without the glass. (And maybe you’ll be encouraged to come back for one more week?)
There is a little more bad news. There is another reason the shower is not complete. I realized on Monday that I was short tiles to finish the top and bottom rows of the walls with the 12×12 marble look porcelain tiles.
The boxes for the mosaic tiles were the same size as the wall tile and I wrongly assumed the boxes at the bottom of my stack were wall tiles. Uh oh. The good news? South Cypress is kindly sending me the rest of the tiles I need. Hopefully, they will arrive on Friday.
Needless to say, I still have a week’s worth of late nights ahead of me.
So what’s left? It’s quite a long list.
- Finish tile and grout
- Plumber to install all fixtures and tub
- Install molding and finishes, hang new doors
- Install new door hardware
- Paint moldings
- Hang chandelier
- Hang curtain rod & curtains
- Style and photograph the room!

November 3, 2016 at 7:21 amOh man, this is a GIANT undertaking! I love the wallpaper and am super jealous of the clean marble tiles… our bathroom is an 80s dream. Nothing neutral in there. 🙂 Ha!
