How to Style Your Home for Fall: A Fall Home Tour

This fall I wanted to capture the “feeling” of fall through the addition of one cohesive shade. You will see in this Seasonal Simplicity Fall Home Tour how I “styled my home” for fall instead of adding copious amounts of decorations.

This is the first fall home tour in our new downsized home so I thought it would be a great opportunity to take you through all of the main areas of our home. This week marks the one year anniversary here!

Front Porch & Door

The front porch is a simple one level. By adding layers of plants and pumpkins on your way to the front door I hoped to make it feel a little grander and of course offer a warm fall welcome.

Our welcoming committee of one, Freddie the Irish Doodle, looks well behaved here because I commanded him to sit. Ha! If you actually came to the door, he would be jumping wildly at the window, more than a little eager for you to become his best friend.

Soft grasses & Mini Pumpkins in the Foyer

To style the foyer, many of the elements remained the same since acquiring this antique buffet just a couple of months ago. The mantle clock will remain a permanent fixture here. It belonged to my grandmother and her mother before. Adding a layer of personal history to your home makes it feel extra special.

I switched out the previous leaning art for an antique print that felt like it represented the season. Only the tassel on the pull of the buffet hints to the color palette of what is to come.

For that natural fall touch here, I added fluffy grasses and a pair of pumpkins to a wooden bowl.

Seasonal Touches in the Kitchen

In the Kitchen, I started with a dramatic centerpiece on the island, a few apples and warm scented candles.

I always love a good candle, but something about those fall scents that really help to make it feel like there’s a transition in the seasons, especially in the Deep South. When temperatures consistently drop just enough for you to not feel hot and sweaty when you go outside, that’s when it’s truly fall around here.

My favorite candle find this season has got to be the Ceremony Tea candle from Anthropologie. It smells absolutely amazing, much like my favorite cup of chai tea!! I love that it comes in several different vessels too.

I love how with those simple additions, the room instantly felt warm, inviting and seemed to beacon me to put together a big pot of soup!

As you move through the house now, I think you will see how that one color shaped my transition to fall this season.

On the small open shelves around the window I switched out the art and added a bunch of dried florals in the rich tones I longed for this season.

Once I had a shade and tone of color chosen to incorporate, I looked for natural elements, mostly dried grasses and leaves to sprinkle the various shades around the house.

This year, as you might can tell by now, I wanted to add a lovely dark plum or grape color.

In all honesty, this shade of purple might be what repeats for fall every year. It is so perfectly suited to the mix of neutrals, grey and slate that already existed in our home’s decor.

Gather around the Table

While this dining area may appear slightly formal, we have our daily meals here. If there is one place where I embrace minimalism, this is it. I prefer only adornments that allow for a relaxed, easy conversation. The addition of pillar candles in vintage brass candlesticks makes the table feels a little more dressed up.

Just a simple long bowl filled with moss, baby boo pumpkins, seed pods and other natural elements bring fall to the table.

On the sideboard dresser, I added more saturated hues of plum in dried grasses and accessories that seemed appropriate to the feeling of fall.

The wood beads were a DIY from a couple of years ago. I love how the wood tones of the beads and the antique corbel quiet the strong black dresser.

In the Living Room

The living room is where the color choices for this season originated. I tried rusts, deep crimsons, mustard and nothing felt quite right until these Napa Grape Washed Velvet Pillow covers arrived.

Then I began searching for additional items to continue that palette.

The hand blown glass vase was a lucky, inexpensive find at an antique store I picked up on a road trip. I had just decided that plum was the color I was adding for fall when I stumbled upon this.

Art plays a major role in the “feeling of fall”

If you hadn’t noticed the other character I keep mentioning is how I incorporated art. Most importantly, digital versions of vintage art to fully express that fall feeling. Digital art is an easy and affordable way to beautifully update your home for the seasons.

Our new streamlined mantle required me to get creative. A collection of wooden vases and slender candlesticks fit the bill perfectly. *This room was recently part of the Spring One Room Challenge. You can see this dramatic makeover here.

Transitioning to Fall in the Main Bedroom

I have yet to fully devote my attention to decorating this room. It has the basic color I picked on the walls. Most everything transitioned nicely from our previous home.

To make the room cozier, I wanted to transition from our bright white bedding to something more neutral. Boll and Branch offered to let me try bedding from their line of linens and I was thrilled to oblige.

I opted for the Heritage Quilt Set in Pewter and absolutely love the softness and the texture it adds to the bed. It’s as beautiful as it is functional. I also appreciate how generously it is sized. And even though we have fairly mild winters, our previous quilt barely covered the bed which neither of us appreciated when the temps dropped.

I also purchased a set of sheets. I have long heard of the outstanding quality of organic cotton sheets from Boll and Branch and finally ordered a set. I selected the Percale Tailored Sheet set in Light Pewter to tie together all of the layers that make a bed feel luxurious.

On a whim. I decided to replace the watercolor art I had on either side of the bed with my fall leaf prints. I love how the stacked prints look here.
