Alstroemeria is not necessarily my favorite flower

Alstroemeria is not necessarily my favorite flower, but they are one of the best looking, longest lasting grocery store flowers. I can always pick them up for about $4 a bunch in just about whatever color I desire. They can simply be cut to fit a vase, for a quick and easy floral touch. Or pair them with other flowers and greenery to enhance any arrangement, like in the arrangement I shared yesterday.

Thank you for your prayers and kind words this weekend. While may aunt was special to me, it would be selfish of me to neglect what an impact she had on so many young girls and children and the community I grew up in. For 40 years, her dance studio was a safe place for thousands of young people to learn dance, feel cared for and seen. I saw this not only as a student myself, but as a student dance teacher at the studio when I was in high school. Her smile and kind words were for everyone and she loved teaching dance. To say she will be missed seems like an incredible understatement.

It’s hard to pick a favorite view of our kitchen

It’s hard to pick a favorite view of our kitchen. But I think the sink wall ranks pretty high. Especially when you consider the original design of this kitchen was supposed to have just uppers here. “No thank you,” I said. “Just leave those cabinets off. I’ll add my own charm after we move in.” Then came two walls of brick and these oak shelves I designed to offer just enough storage and interest.

You don’t have to settle for the ordinary in your new build or existing home if what you want something special. Devise a plan, or hire a designer to help you. Often just a few small tweaks can make a huge difference. It’s often said design is in the details. And those details are not always grand schemes but in the small, considered touches.

Winter as a mood. The light in winter is bright and undoubtedly cooler, which makes this winter reset even more wintery looking, don't you think? I love the punch of saturated violet. It is a welcome pop of color in this tonal scene. ⁠

The vase the flowers are in was a teal glass vessel with a soft texture but was the perfect shape for this vignette. I gave it a super quick makeover with flat black spray paint and dabs of limewash smeared on. The longest part of the process was waiting for the spray paint to dry. The grey days of winter are upon us, but this morning the sun was brilliant. I finally finished the winter look in the living room, complete with a switch to the dark velvet slipcovers.

My husband strongly dislikes these, the original slip covers for our Farlov sofas, but I think they are cozy and plush. He thinks they are hot. (But isn’t that the point in the winter?) We negotiated for quite some time after the Christmas decor came down and the verdict is they can stay on for about a month. I love the contrast and will likely purchase darker colored slipcovers in a fabric he can live with longer. He loves the sleek velvet of our @bemzdesign covers, so I’ve ordered samples.
